Viljandi medieval city wall

Medieval Viljandi was surrounded on three sides by powerful defensive walls. The wall built between 1260 and 1300 was nearly four metres high and two meters wide in some places.
According to old chronicles, there were four towers on the wall, from which the city’s defenders threw stuff at the enemy. There were three gates inside the wall for well-intentioned citizens. Outside the walls, the city was protected by deep moats.
In its original place, several fragments of the wall are visible. The largest of these are on display in the Garden of Arcadia and behind the Town Hall. At the foot of Kauba Street, you can find part of the old Riga Gate.
