Ruunaraipe dunes in Soomaa

Ruunaraipe dunes are the favourite trip destination for people living in Viljandi. In addition to the beautiful surroundings, the area also offers a lot of mushrooms and berries in the summer and autumn.

The dunes, which are located in the estuarine area of the Raudna valley on the north-western edge of Sakala Upland, were formed ten thousand years ago – when the surrounding area was still under water.

Today, vacationers can enjoy a magnificent pine forest, a lovely picnic site, surprisingly large sand hills, and, if they are lucky, loads of mushrooms and berries that they can fill their baskets with.
