Mulgimaa

The origin of Mulgimaa’s famous wealth was the growth of the town, the pace of which accelerated at the beginning of the 19th century. It was the Mulks of Southern Viljandi County who were the first peasants to purchase farms from manor lords following their emancipation from serfdom. Their growth in wealth was demonstrated by stately manor houses, as well as their ability to send their children to study in the best and most expensive schools.
Today, an attempt is being made to keep the traditions of the Mulks alive through the Mulgi language, traditional costumes and food.

In each Mulgimaa parish, visitors are greeted by a grand wooden sculpture.
